5 Upcycling Projects For The SummerWith summer just around the corner, there’s no better time to revamp some of that old household furniture into items you are proud of displaying anywhere in your home! As a big believer in DIY household projects, let me tell you that the whole “creating something from nothing” concept is much easier than most are prone to believe.

For those of you who are not familiar with the concept, Upcycling is simply the process of converting something old into something new, useful, or beautiful. Today, I’m going to tell you a little bit about “Upcycling” and give you five upcycling project ideas that are easy to implement and sure to leave to you satisfied.

One of the great things about upcycling is that you can use seemingly worthless things to tell your own story and create a narrative that resonates with you and your family. Upcycling has caught on as quite a trend lately, with major retail outlets selling handmade and upcycled furniture.

1. Upcycling Old Doors

Have an old door lying about? This piece of furniture is surprisingly versatile, and can be upcycled into anything from coffee tables to pot racks. One of my favorite projects is this door frame turned coffee table, by the DIY Network.

2. Upcycling Wine Bottles

If you are anything like me, you probably have a huge collection of empty wine bottles stashed away in various storage areas. In a lot of places, it’s quite hard to recycle glass, and people end up throwing their bottles away in the trash. With a little bit of effort though, you can upcycle wine bottles (or any other type of glass bottle) into pretty light fixtures that you might otherwise pay a bomb for in stores.  This tutorial shows you how to make a dramatic wine bottle chandelier. Other wine bottle projects include stuffing them with fairy lights or using them as candle holders to create light accents.

3. Upcycling Old Books

As an avid reader, I have a bunch of old books lying around. I don’t have the heart to throw them away, but I have to admit that books can take up a lot of space. Converting books into shelves (literally “book shelves”) is a

fun and personal way to create more storage space–maybe for more books! This easy tutorial by Real Simple shows you how to do just that in only three steps!

4. Upcycling Old Suitcases

Suitcases aren’t just for traveling. Your vintage trunks can be used to create a variety of different household objects like a bar, a lounger, or a nightstand. This article describes 14 different ways your suitcase can be upcycled into something unique and striking.

5. Upcycling Old Clothes

Instead of throwing away old clothes, consider using the fabric to make something truly one-of-a-kind. There are thousands of projects out there involving cloth, from creative wall hangings to handmade tote bags. You will most definitely be able to find a good use for your unworn clothes!

I hope this article inspires you to be less wasteful and more eco-friendly. If that’s not enough of a reason to upcycle, think of the wonderful things you can create using old and rather unassuming items to transform your home into a more personalized and aesthetically-pleasing place to live!
