Using SEO To Achieve A Top Search RankingHave your own website? Not getting any visitors? You can pay to have traffic sent to your site, or you can get free referrals from search engines. The problem is, it’s much easier said than done. So how do you get the search engines to list your website and send people to it? Search Engine Optimization.

You can have the most interesting and best designed site in the world, but no one will be able to find it if you are not using proper SEO. SEO has been a very hot topic for many years. Google, of course, is the man with all the cards. Please Google, and you’re set for life.

The problem is, Google’s rules are constantly in flux. Better stated, their algorithms to decipher which websites are actually worth visiting are getting smarter and smarter everyday. Which means you can’t game the system. In fact, if Google’s algorithms sense that you’re trying to cheat the system, they’ll actually de-list your site from their search results. Not good.

TIP! Make sure your site uses header tags appropriately. Headers are one thing that search engines use in the ranking process because they’re good indications of exactly what your site is focused on.

Search Engine Optimization

It used to be that SEO revolved heavily around keywords. Keywords are specific words or phrases that your website or individual pages on your website are focused on. Keywords are what people type into search engines when they want to learn something. And keywords are what Google uses as the basis for deciding which websites they show people for each individual search.

For example, if you have a website about DIY Home Improvements, and you write a blog post about How To Fix a Squeaky Door, that phrase “how to fix a squeaky door” is one keyword among many that Google will consider putting your blog post into its search results for.

Whether your blog post shows up as the top result for that particular phrase or on page 5 or 50 or 500 for that particular phrase, depends on a bunch of different factors. And that is what the game of SEO is all about – trying to get your webpage or website as high as possible in the search results for specific keywords and keyword phrases. Because obviously, the higher you show up in the results, the more free traffic you’re going to get.

After scores of updates by Google, the basic rule of thumb in 2015 is not to write for Google but to write for your audience. Don’t try to stuff a billion different keywords or a billion instances of just 1 keyword into your website. Make your site reader friendly; human friendly; actually helpful to your audience.

TIP! Remain patient when attempting to boost your site’s SEO value, remember that it’s not going to all happen overnight. There are literally millions of websites competing for your same keywords. Ranking #1 doesn’t happen overnight.

Google looks at all sorts of different things when trying to decide if they’re going to use your site in its search results and if so how high they should place it. They don’t come out and tell everyone what their exact formula is for making those decisions. Instead, they tell us principles of what makes for a search-engine friendly website. They give us factors that they take into consideration.

For example, a good site is one that is shared around on social media. If lots of people are sharing your site with their friends, that’s a good indication to Google that what your site has to say is important. Or if not important, at least something lots of people actually want to read. A good site is also one that loads quickly. Nobody wants to wait 15 or 20 seconds for your website to load. People just leave your site rather than wait for it.

Backlinks

Another important factor Google takes into account is how many other websites talk about your website and send people from theirs to yours for more information. They call these “backlinks” – links that other people put on their sites linking back to your site. Google looks at both the quantity and quality of these backlinks. If well respected sites refer to yours, it’s a sign that what your site has to say is important.

The trick with backlinks, though, is that they’re easy to buy. Junk backlinks are easy to buy, that is. And Google knows how to figure out if they’re junk or if they’re real. There’s no point buying 1,000 backlinks to your site if they’re fake, junk, or spam backlinks. That will literally hurt your site’s chances at getting ranked much more than it will ever help it. Be very careful with your backlinks.

TIP! If you are trying to optimize your site to improve your search ranking, it’s important to make sure that your site’s code is clean and well written. Messy coding makes it difficult for spiders & bots to index your site.

Although there are a myriad of other factors, we’ll just briefly mention a few more. Things such as how old your website is, how many visitors come to your website, how many pages your visitors read while on your website, how long or short they stay on your website, how well your website is designed from a structural and coding point of view, and how much interaction your visitors have with your website by way of leaving comments or participating in forums or discussions on your website are all things Google looks at.

Search Engine Optimization, or SEO for short, can make or break a website these days. If you’re new to SEO, do a lot of research before starting to tweak things. It’s best to hire someone who knows what they’re doing and has a good track record of success. Whether it’s on-page SEO or off-page SEO, though, knowing as much as possible about it is essential for all website owners.
